4 ноября 1941 при эвакуации гарнизона Ханко в Кронштадт в 23:10 подорвался на мине, потерял ход. Двадцать минут спустя ещё один подрыв, сдетонировал боезапас в носовом орудийном погребе, оторвало нос корабля вплоть до мостика. В 23:50 ЭМ подорвался на ещё одной мине, которая разорвала его пополам, убив более половины экипажа и пассажиров. Кормовая часть корабля затонула в 00:30 в районе острова Найссаар. 80 членов экипажа и 274 эвакуированных были спасены минным тральщиком Т-205 и несколькими патрульными катерами.
