24 августа 1916 г. был выведен из боевого состава и использовался как учебный блокшив в Киле, затем как плавказарма в Вильгельмсхафене. В сентябре 1918 его планировалось переоборудовать в корабль-мишень, но планы не были реализованы в связи с окончанием войны. В 1919 был перестроен в Вильгельмсхафене в плавбазу-носитель катеров-тральщиков. Wittelsbach стал флагманским судном немецкой минно-тральной группы.
